North Carolina
Unity Conference
United Tribes of North
Carolina held its 35th Annual North Carolina Unity Conference in
Raleigh, NC this past March 11-13. The theme this year was
"Thirty-five Years of Empowering North Carolina's Indigenous People:
1975-2010." The conference presented an "Agenda of Action" to
unite Native American and non-Native American voices to address the
health, economic,
education, social, culture, governance/political
and spiritual needs of Native people. A major focus of
the Unity Conference was the 2010 U.S. Census and the importance of
tribal communities and individuals
to participate in the census. Presentations were made by the
U.S. Census Bureau Regional Director and Census Bureau headquarters
staff. In an effort to further promote the importance of
Native American participation in the Census the state recognized
tribes signed partnership agreements with the Census Bureau.
Representing the Meherrin Tribe during the signing were Thomas
Lewis, Chief of the Meherrin Tribe and Devonna Mountain Mosser,
tribal council member.
Many tribal citizens attended the
Unity Conference's three days of assemblies, banquets and workshops
focused on the "Agenda of Action." The Unity Conference also included
a
powwow,
gospel sing and art competitions. This year Maxine Winston,
Meherrin tribal citizen, won "Best in Show" in the quilt competition.
Each year at the Unity Conference Miss Indian North Carolina is chosen
and the Meherrin Tribe had the honor of having Dr. Aaron Winston,
Meherrin tribal council
member, to be seated on the panel of judges this year.
Thanks to all of our citizens who represented the Meherrin Tribe at this
year's North Carolina Unity Conference!
